School to Work

The School-to-Work Program at Crook County is in Place to Ensure All Students Have the Opportunity to Succeed After High School.

• Providing opportunity for Internships, Work Experience, and Peer/Juvenile Tutoring allows for a contextual experience in which students can apply classroom learning to real life situations and benefit from the experience.
• Assisting students in finding their career path and to providing resources toward a smooth transition to life after high school.

The School-to-Work Program is in place to assist students in determining a career path and understanding what it will take to succeed in their chosen career.  Students participating in the program must meet GPA, attendance, and conduct requirements.

Much of the learning which takes place is “contextual,” occurs in real life situations and hands on environments.  Students will learn concepts such as communication skills, workplace readiness, workplace behavior, business ethics, job-finding strategies, resume development, and interview skills.

Internships

Internships are unpaid work-based educational experiences that bridge the gap between academics and career exploration.  Students are better prepared to make appropriate choices regarding colleges and fields of study as a result of the internship experience.  Internships allow for additional development of career and technical competencies within a general career field.  Students are expected to conduct themselves as professionals including; appropriate dress, punctuality, and conduct.

Students earn academic credit for each semester that STW requirements are met while working in a unpaid after/before school or summer internship with an emphasis placed on transferable skills in line with the students future career goals.

Work Experience

Work Experience teaches young people how to perform in a business setting.  Students acquire a firm foundation of knowledge and skills, confidence in their own abilities, and an understanding that learning continues for life.

Students earn academic credit for each semester that STW requirements are met while working in a paid after/before school or summer job with an emphasis placed on transferable skills in line with the students future career goals.

Juvenile Tutoring

Peer Tutoring matches up tutors with fellow high school students in classroom settings but with a focus on one-on-one tutoring opportunities.  Peer tutors reinforce basic skills that traditionally lead to academic success including; time management, problem solving techniques and independent learning.  The main goal of Peer Tutoring is to build the peer student’s self-confidence in and out of class.

Juvenile Tutoring is an ideal opportunity for students interested in careers in education and/or working with children.  Students will be assigned to a class in one of Crook County’s elementary or middle schools.  Students will assist teachers with lessons, work one-on-one with students, and receive mentorship from the assigned teacher.  Emphasis is put on transferable work skills and learning career related standards for teachers.

Career Fair

The School-to-Work Program puts on our annual Career Fair each spring at CCHS.  This event is designed to provide an opportunity for students to learn from professionals in the field about what steps are necessary to pursue a specific career.  The Career Fair is also an opportunity for students looking for summer or after graduation employment, internships or volunteer opportunities as many of the companies represented participate with the intention of recruiting students to fill positions.  All students participate in the career fair as it occurs during the school day in the CCHS Commons.
